About Espejo

Espejo – Spanish for “The Mirror” – debuted in the 1970’s as a student run, print published literary magazine.  After a long hiatus, the Creative Writing Program at Southern Methodist University revived the magazine in an new online format.  Espejo is dedicated to showcasing the work of student poets, fiction writers, screenwriters, essayists, and artists.  In addition, Espejo is the best resource for information on the Creative Writing Program at SMU.

Both current and prospective students will find information on the latest developments in the Program, including course offerings, professor biographies, contest information, events such as the renowned Gilbert Lecture Series and the annual Southern Methodist University Literary Festival, and Writers Group, our student run organization for lovers of literature and an outlet for discussions on current artistic trends and movements.

This semester we are also adding pages for each of our dedicated contributors that will showcase the work published in Espejo.  We are especially excited about this latest project and the visibility it will give to our student artists.  In addition, SMU is blessed to have widely published writers from across the country as Guest Editors, and we look forward to their contributions to the creative writing community we have built within the SMU English Department.

Espejo, along with the Creative Writing Department, is experiencing an unprecedented explosion of growth and innovation.  We invite you to browse the site, learn about the Program and its esteemed faculty, and read some quality student work.  Together, the student body and faculty are bringing exciting changes to SMU, and we hope you will join us as we chronicle the growth of the Creative Writing Program here at Southern Methodist University.

All our best, and Pony Up!

The Editors
