SMU Writers Group is the student organization for Creative Writing specialists within the English Department, and also welcomes creative writers from all over campus.  Our members are dedicated to developing their craft and sharing their work and insights.  We have regular workshops, faculty led meetings, student led discussions, and writers retreats to give students plenty of opportunities to both broaden and refine their work.

This semester will be an exciting one for SMUWG.  Our lineup of faculty discussions is diverse, running from Problems in Poetry to Ang Lee films.  We have instituted Film Fridays on the last Friday of every month, with discussions led by Matt Anderson.  This month’s film is Fight Club, and films to come include Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, There Will Be Blood, and Stranger Than Fiction, in addition to a field trip to see the debut of the new Alice in Wonderland in March.

SMU boasts a premiere theatre department, and this semester’s mainstage productions are right up our alley: “La Dispute,” “Mrs. Warren’s Profession,” and “Much Ado About Nothing.”  Each production is $7 for students and will be preceded by lunch at the infamous Fuel City.

Several field trips have been scheduled, including one to explore the rich cultural offerings of Ft. Worth,  Six Flags, and trips to the DMA’s Arts and Letters program and to the Writer’s Garret.  After Spring Break, we are excited to have our first SMUWG service project.  We’ll host a book drive to benefit the Dallas Phoenix House Academy..

For the second year in a row, Writers Group will be putting on the renowned SMU Literary Festival.  Look for more details as the date approaches.

We have a busy but fun semester ahead of us!  Join us at Cafe Brazil on Thursday, January 21 at 6:00 to catch up with friends, find out what’s going on this semester, and maybe pick up a book or two – bring any textbooks/books you have to buy for English classes you might want to trade, and you might save a few bucks.  Bring your friends – the more the merrier!
